SUMMARY:May 29 - Social Outreach Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Social outreach discussions will continue Tuesdays (May 8\, 15\, 22\, and 29) from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in FCC’s Parlor\, 15 East Fifth. We will be looking at several alternatives for PUUF’s Social Outreach programming. We are considering assisting First Christian Church’s Bread and Cup Ministry\, which serves Hutchinson’s homeless men and women. And we have been considering two possible public awareness\, education and advocacy initiatives: 1) A campaign to educate the citizens of Hutchinson and the surrounding area about the dangers to the environment and to public health from fracking\, a technique for extracting natural gas\, and about the hype from the oil and gas industry which has accompanied the recent boom in drilling throughout south central Kansas. 2) A campaign to encourage local citizens to join nationwide efforts to repeal Citizens United\, the recent Supreme Court decision which gave corporations the power of “personhood” and the right to make unlimited\, anonymous donations to political campaigns. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the discussions to help in defining our social outreach programs. Email kay.engler@cox.net for more information.

SUMMARY:May 20 Documentary Film Night - "For The Bible Tells Me So"
DESCRIPTION:Sunday evening May 20 is our documentary film night. Come to the fellowship hall at 6 p.m. with a snack to share and watch “For The Bible Tells Me So”. Here is the synopsis from the film’s website: Can the love between two people ever be an abomination? Is the chasm separating gays and lesbians and Christianity too wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate? Through the experiences of five very normal\, very Christian\, very American families -- including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson -- we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu\, Harvard’s Peter Gomes\, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech\, “For The Bible Tells Me So” offers healing\, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity.

SUMMARY:April 10 - Social Outreach Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Results of the visioning exercise from the March 11 service showed that the majority chose environmental issues\, focusing on our local community. In the last two meetings of The Great Turning discussion group we discussed two possible projects: an anti-fracking campaign/initiative\, and the creation of a Resiliency Circle/Common Security Club in the Transition Town model. We’ll continue to meet Tuesday nights at 7:00 through April at FCC to continue our discussions about potential social outreach projects for PUUF. Please come give us your input. All ideas are welcome! You do not need to have read The Great Turning in order to participate in these social action group meetings. Questions? Call Kay Engler at 620-728-1237 or check out www.local circles.org or www.transitionus.org for more information about these concepts.

SUMMARY:April 15 Documentary Film Night and Pot Luck
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday April 15\, come gather for a pot luck and watch a 53 minute documentary reflecting this month’s focus on reverence and in celebration of Earth Day\, In the Light of Reverence: Protecting America’s Sacred Lands. “Across the USA\, Native Americans are struggling to protect their sacred places. Religious freedom\, so valued in America\, is not guaranteed to those who practice land-based religion. Every year\, more sacred sites -- the land-based equivalent of the world’s great cathedrals -- are being destroyed. Strip-mining and development cause much of the destruction. But rock climbers\, tourists and New Age religious practitioners are part of the problem too. The biggest problem is ignorance. In the Light of Reverence tells the story of three indigenous communities and the lands they struggle to protect: the Lakota of the Great Plains\, the Hopi of the Four Corners area\, and the Winnemem Wintu of Northern California.”

SUMMARY:March 11 Service - The Story of Now
DESCRIPTION:March 11 – PUUF Service\, 11:00 am in FCC Little Chapel\, 15 E. 5th Ave\, Hutchinson. Seeing and saying what’s true about our local community and our time helps us identify how we fit in and what’s ours to do. As in “The Great Turning”\, its possible to change the story. Building liberal religious community in the Hutchinson area requires keen awareness of the area’s history and yearnings. Your observations are welcome. (Note that we will meet in the FCC Chapel – enter the East door off of Walnut St. There is also a parking lot across from this door.) After the service\, we are welcome to join with the FCC Congregation for their annual Potato Bar Luncheon with entertainment by the Wichita Caledonian Pipe and Drum Band in FCC Fellowship Hall\, 12:00 p.m. The Potato Bar is a free will donation.

SUMMARY:March 20 - Social Justice Discussion Series: The Story of Now
DESCRIPTION:The fifth session in The Story of Now: a five week study of The Great Turning: from Empire to Earth Community by David Korten. Kay Engler leads this discussion on Tuesdays from 7-9 pm beginning Feb. 21. It is the premise of The Great Turning that we humans stand at a defining moment that presents us with an irrevocable choice. “By what name will our children and our children’s children call our time? Will they speak in anger and frustration of the time of the Great Unraveling\, when profligate consumption led to an accelerating wave of collapsing environmental systems\, violent competition for what remained of the planet’s resources\, a dramatic dieback of the human population\, and a fragmentation of those who remained into warring fiefdom’s ruled by ruthless local lords? Or will they look back in joyful celebration on the noble time of The Great Turning\, when their forbears turned crisis into opportunity\, embraced the higher-order potential of their human nature\, learned to live in creative partnership with one another and the living Earth\, and brought forth a new era of human possibility?” Our collective response will determine how our time is remembered for so long as the human species survives. For an overview of Korten’s work and ideas\, check out his web site at www.livingeconomiesforum.org. In particular\, see Korten’s article The Great Turning published in the summer 2006 edition of Yes magazine: www.yesmagazine.org/pdf/gt.pdf. The five session discussion guide for The Great Turning that we will use is available on the living economies website. All interested persons invited. DESCRIPTION:The fourth session in The Story of Now: a five week study of The Great Turning: from Empire to Earth Community by David Korten. SUMMARY:February 12 Service: Our Stories of Self
DESCRIPTION:Standing on the Side of Love invites us to express love together publicly\, through justice work. By reflecting on our personal experience of facing challenges and making choices based on our values\, we can see that we have the capacity to stand up for what we think is right. This is the Story of Self that reminds ourselves and tells others how we have been inspired. Listening to each others’ stories\, we come to know individual strengths and the wealth of resources we collectively bring to our religious/spiritual community. For our community discussion and personal story sharing\, be thinking of an experience where you chose to stand up for what you thought was right and what you learned from doing that. 11:00 am in FCC Parlor\, 15 E. 5th Ave\, Hutchinson. Childcare is provided during the service. Soup’s On! After service soup\, hot bread\, and salad Fellowship lunch - in the FCC Fellowship Hall\, 12:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:February 26 Service: Our Stories of Us
DESCRIPTION:Once we have heard each other’s stories\, we can see what values we hold in common. Identifying where our stories touch helps us tell the story of who we are together. Then we know how to talk about why we are part of PUUF. We’ll think together about PUUF as a group\, with its history\, resources\, and hopes. We’ll use the Stories of Self as building blocks for our community\, shaping them into stories we all share. We will begin to identify challenges and supports/allies for a common direction. 11:00 am in FCC Parlor\, 15 E. 5th Ave\, Hutchinson. Childcare is provided during the service. Soup’s On! SUMMARY:Spiritual Cinema Film Night: "I AM"
DESCRIPTION:Mike will be showing the documentary "I AM" for the Spiritual Cinema Film Night Feb. 5\, at the Penwell Gable Community Room. Enter the west door. We've moved the start time to 6 pm to have time for talk afterwards. Bring a snack to share. I AM\, a prismatic and probing exploration of our world\, what’s wrong with it\, and what we can do to make it better\, represents Tom Shadyac’s first foray into non-fiction following a career as one of Hollywood’s leading comedy practitioners\, with such successful titles as “Ace Ventura\,” “Liar Liar\,” and “Bruce Almighty” to his credit. I AM recounts what happened to the filmmaker after a cycling accident left him incapacitated\, possibly for good. Though he ultimately recovered\, he emerged a changed man. Disillusioned with life on the A-list\, he sold his house\, moved to a mobile home community\, and decided to start life anew. Armed with nothing but his innate curiosity and a camera crew\, Shadyac embarks upon a journey to discover how he as an individual\, and we as a race\, can improve the way we live. Appearing on-screen as character\, commentator\, guide\, and even\, at times\, guinea pig\, Shadyac meets with a variety of thinkers and doers--remarkable men and women from the worlds of science\, philosophy\, and faith--including such luminaries as David Suzuki\, Noam Chomsky\, Howard Zinn\, Archbishop Desmond Tutu\, Lynne McTaggart\, Ray Anderson\, John Francis\, Coleman Barks\, and Marc Ian Barasch. An irrepressible Everyman who asks many questions but offers no easy answers\, he takes the audience to places it has never been before\, and presents even familiar phenomena in completely new and different ways. -- (C) Paladin (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/i_am_2011/)

SUMMARY:January 8 Service - The Way of Faith
DESCRIPTION:Jan. 8 - “The Way of Faith” with Rev. Thea Nietfeld. Pilgrims in the recent Estevez movie about the Camino de Santiago walked for change in their lives\, while following traditions and finding surprising solidarity. In daily life too\, seeking meaning involves taking risks and staying steady. And we’ll celebrate sharing a home! Homeade soup and Mike’s hot bread will be served as a Fellowship luncheon after this service (We hope to make this a regular service event!) Plan on staying for this fellowship time - and bring a friend! Rev. Thea is invigorating our minds with conversation starter questions about the month’s focus on “faith” (see below) so there should be lots of discussion and just more time to get to know your fellow PUUFers! Buddhist teacher Sharon Salzberg says faith has to do with trust\, inspiration\, confidence and patience. It needs to be balanced with wisdom. Faith is a willingness to be open\, to explore and to investigate. (Salzberg/faith\, 1996) Here’s an experiment for aiding our individual and collective search for meaning: monthly discussion questions to provoke conversation among Fellowship members. For starters\, we will use these questions as food for thought during our after service Soup’s On! luncheon conversation Sunday January 8. Discussions can also be continued online on our Facebook page\, during minister’s office hours in Salina\, or anywhere else we connect with each other. The Salina Fellowship will also be contemplating these questions and we look forward to sharing the conversations among the two Fellowships. How is your faith different now from when you were growing up? Have you had a faith-enhancing and/or faith-destroying experience? What do we mean when we say “I have faith in you”? How did our religious forebears express their faith? What is the faith of a humanist? How do we help each other restore or develop faith? Childcare is provided during the service.

DESCRIPTION:“The Peace Within” is the focus for the December 18 service\, at the Rice Park Community Bldg. This service will be an alternative format called a Spiritual Circle Service. Rather than a message focus\, we will listen to poems\, prayers\, meditations and songs of peace. Let us think about how and where we have found inner peace\, and bring those stories to share with others. You might want to bring a poem or a short reading about finding peace within to also share with the group. Fellowship time with hot bread/coffee/tea is from 10:30 - 11:00 am and after the service. Childcare is provided. All are welcome!

SUMMARY:Dec. 4 Service - “Our Theologies of Peacemaking”
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Thea Nietfeld will bring the message “Our Theologies of Peacemaking” when we meet at the Rice Park Community Building for the December 4 service. From Universalist Adin Ballou (1846) to contemporary UU theologian Paul Rasor\, the values we hold in common and our tradition of social concern offer guidance for peacemakers. In this season when we sing of peace\, let’s consider how we might carry this thread of our tradition into the new year. For an aftertalk discussion\, consider these questions: When and where in your life have you made peace? What are the qualities of a good peacemaker? What helps you make peace with others? What are the obstacles to making peace? What keeps you from making peace? How has your theology or philosophy of life helped you to make peace? Have you ever participated in peacemaking groups in the wider community? What was your experience?

SUMMARY:October 16 Service with Guest Minister Rev. Jill Jarvis, "WWHMD (What Would Horace Mann Do?)"
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Jill Jarvis\, minister at the Lawrence\, KS Unitarian Fellowship\, will be our guest speaker for the October 16 service. Rev. Jarvis was instrumental in helping PUUF reorganize as a congregational fellowship\, and we are pleased to have her enthusiasm\, wit\, and sense of the sacred return to our pulpit. Morning activities will be held at the Elmdale Community Center. A FORUM discussion will be from 9:30-10:30. Fellowship hour is at 10:30 and after the service. The service begins at 11 a.m. Rev. Jarvis' message: WWHMD (What Would Horace Mann Do?) Unitarians have an historical connection to public education in America. Public schooling was meant to promote democratic values and build the common good. Yet our nation’s educational system is alarmingly unequal\, with woefully inadequate urban and rural schools\, wealthy suburban schools\, and families with resources increasingly opting out of the public schools altogether. There is even a growing network of Unitarian Universalist homeschoolers. Committed to democratic values\, the common good\, justice\, compassion\, and our own children\, what's a parent to do? Is Horace Mann turning over in his grave? October 16 Forum: Bring on the Learning Revolution Sir Ken Robinson\, PhD is an internationally recognized leader in the development of education\, creativity and innovation. He is also one of the world’s leading speakers with a profound impact on audiences everywhere. We will watch one of his famous TED Talks and his video animation “Changing Education Paradigms” to lead into a discussion of the ideas presented. This FORUM begins at 9:30 am October 16 at Elmdale Community Center.

SUMMARY:September 11: Spiritual Cinema Film Night
DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy an evening of popcorn and shared snacks while watching a recent release from the Spiritual Cinema Circle Film Series. As stated on their website\, these films are “carefully-chosen to provide genuine nourishment for the heart and soul\, a much-needed nutrient at a time when more and more Hollywood movies are violent\, profane and devoid of meaning. Our movies inspire wonder\, insight\, deep feeling and transcendence. Above all\, they make you feel better about being a human being.” Showing September 11\, at 7 pm\, at the Penwell Gable Community Room (enter west door)\, watch the movie Amal: a multi-layered portrait of contemporary India\, that follows an auto-rickshaw driver in New Delhi (Amal) who is content with his small\, but vital role in life. One day he drives an eccentric billionaire who\, disguised as a vagabond\, is searching the streets for the last morsel of humanity\, and someone he can leave all his money to\, and [Amal’s] life may change forever. Amal serves up a visual feast for audiences. Filmed on location in New Delhi\, India\, this modern day fable asks the important question of what success means to each individual and ultimately reveals that the poorest of men are sometimes the richest. -Short Synopsis from Amal’s Press Kit. Popcorn and drinks will be served\, and bring a snack to share!

SUMMARY:Free Documentary Screening: MAQUILAPOLIS [city of factories]
DESCRIPTION:The inspiring story of women workers in Tijuana who\, though laboring for poverty wages\, still stand up to transnational corporations to win severance pay and to clean up toxic waste sites. Carmen Durán works the graveyard shift in one of Tijuana’s 800 maquiladoras; she is one of six million women around the world who labor for poverty wages in the factories of transnational corporations. After making television components all night\, Carmen comes home to a dirt-floor shack she built out of cast-off garage doors from the U.S.\, in a neighborhood with no sewage lines or electricity. She suffers from on-the-job kidney damage and lead poisoning from her years of exposure to toxic chemicals. She earns six dollars a day on which she must support herself and her three children. Starting in the 1980s the U.S. and Mexican governments initiated a trade agreement allowing components for everything from batteries\, IV tubes\, toys to clothes to be imported duty-free into Mexico\, assembled there and then exported back duty-free as finished consumer goods for sale in the U.S. Tijuana became known as the television capital of the world\, ‘TV-juana.’ Globalization promised jobs\, and working class Mexicans uprooted their lives to flock to the northern frontier in search of better paying work. After a decades long boom in 2001\, Tijuana suffered a recession as corporations chased after even cheaper labor in Asia. When the Sanyo plant where Carmen worked for six years moved to Indonesia\, they tried to avoid paying the legally mandated severance pay. Carmen became a promotora\, or grassroots activist\, challenging the usual illegal tactics of the powerful transnationals that are poisoning their workers and the barrios they inhabit. Through sheer persistence\, Carmen and her fellow workers won the severance pay to which they were entitled by law. In making this documentary\, the filmmakers worked collaboratively with the factory workers\, providing cameras to the women and teaching them how to shoot. For five years the women documented their daily lives and the events in their communities\, often giving the film the intimate tone of a video diary. (http://newsreel.org/video/MAQUILAPOLIS) We will show this film at the Hutchinson Public Library 2nd floor auditorium on Wednesday\, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.. Enjoy free popcorn while you watch. A short discussion will follow. Film website: http://www.maquilapolis.com/

SUMMARY:Septemb 18 FORUM: The March of the Amazon Army
DESCRIPTION:Linda O’Nelio Knoll will be our special guest for the September 18 FORUM at 9:30 am as she gives her presentation “The March of the Amazon Army\, “ an official Kansas Humanities Council Speaker’s Bureau presentation in recognition of the 150th anniversary of Kansas Statehood. In 1921\, thousands of wives\, daughters\, mothers\, sisters and sweethearts of striking coal miners in Southeast Kansas marched in protest against unfair labor practices in the local coal mines. The women’s march made headlines across the nation and the New York Times christened them the “Amazon Army.” The women\, mostly immigrants from southeast Europe\, were effective and halted work in the mines for three days. This presentation explores the history behind this unusual event that took place in Kansas’ own “Little Balkans.” Linda O’Nelio Knoll is an educator\, author\, and historian who works on the local history of Southeast Kansas. This FORUM will be at the Rice Park Community Building. SUMMARY:September 18 Service: The Singing River
DESCRIPTION:The work and music of Carolyn McDade\, who first brought UUs the gift of the water ritual service back in 1980\, will be included in PUUF’s water gathering service on Sept. 18. Bring a small vial of water with a bit of significance for you\, whether it be from your summer travels or backyard faucet\, whether it be representative of a change in yourself or comes as a blessing to alleviate Kansas’ dry conditions. Each person’s water will become collectively part of “the singing river\, the long voice that has held\, washed\, and laid down ten million mornings of song\, yet still rises with her bag of sounds and rubs the currents of river and wind over bare rock\, bearing witness to all that exists in that moment.” Come share how those poetic words from singer/songwriter Carolyn McDade will acknowledge our summer journeys and reconnect us to join in the work of the fellowship in the season ahead. Children will also be invited to add their water to the communal bowl. This service is at Rice Park with a special FORUM presentation by Kansas Humanities Council Speaker's Bureau presenter Linda O’Nelio Knoll at 9:30 am.

SUMMARY:July 17 Service "Beyond Right and Wrong"
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Thea Nietfeld will present her message “Beyond Right and Wrong” at the Rice Park Community Building on July 17. What direction do our grounded\, evolving values point when we step up as engaged citizens at this moment in history - 10 years after 9/11\, the summer after Arab Spring\, as economies shudder and elected officials spin? Through contemplation\, conversation\, and commitment\, we can do our parts for a sustainable world. The time is past for dichotomous politics. This service begins at 11:00. We will have a FORUM discussion from 9:30 - 10:30 am with fellowship time from 10:30 - 11:00 am and after the service. Childcare is available. FORUM Discussion\, 9:30 - 10:30 am: Why Do Societies Fail? Why do societies fail? With lessons from the Norse of Iron Age Greenland\, deforested Easter Island and present-day Montana\, Jared Diamond talks about the signs that collapse is near\, and how -- if we see it in time -- we can prevent it. A globally renowned scholar and author\, Jared Diamond finds answers to the massive “Why?”s in so-vast-you-don’t-notice patterns in history. His bestselling and Pulitzer-winning book Guns\, Germs and Steel looks at the reasons history turned out the way it did -- why European societies conquered the rest of the world instead of the other way around. His latest book\, Collapse\, asks nearly the opposite: Why do some civilizations fail? We will watch a TED talk with Jared Diamond and discuss the questions and solutions he poses. The FORUM hour takes place at Rice Park prior to the service.

SUMMARY:Kathy's Journey" - Forum and Service at Rice Park June 19
DESCRIPTION:9:30 Forum “Beyond Revenge” with Kay Engler In the introduction to his provocative and groundbreaking new book\, Beyond Revenge: the Development of the Forgiveness Instinct\, evolutionary psychologist Michael McCullough says\, “I wrote this book for people who want to understand where human beings’ inspiring capacity for forgiveness and their hair-trigger propensity for revenge come from. It’s for people who want to bypass all the pious-sounding statements about the power of forgiveness\, and all of the fruitless sermonizing about the destructiveness of revenge. It’s for people who want to see human nature for what it really is. It’s also a book for people who want to make the world a better place.” McCullough moves the discussion about revenge and forgiveness from the world of religion to the domain of science\, thereby challenging centuries-old misconceptions. Contrary to conventional wisdom\, McCullough contends that the desire for revenge should not be likened to a “disease” or a “poison” that makes people do terrible things to each other. Instead\, he argues\, natural selection created our penchant for revenge because it helped our ancestors solve social dilemmas they encountered during human evolution. Likewise\, McCullough debunks that forgiveness should be likened as an “antidote” or a “cure” for the desire for revenge. Instead\, he argues\, humans’ capacity to forgive evolved because it helped our ancestors preserve relationships with genetic relatives and other valuable relationship partners. He argues that the key to creating a more forgiving\, less vengeful world is to understand the evolutionary forces that gave rise to these intimately human traits\, the social forces that activate them in human minds today\, and the changes that are necessary to make our relationships and social institutions better at activating the forgiveness instinct. Join Kay Engler for a review of the book’s major findings and a discussion of its implications. 11:00 Service "Kathy's Journey" with Lay Leader Kay Engler The year was 1970\, a tumultuous time of deep divisions in the country over the Vietnam War. There were demonstrations in the streets\, sit-ins\, riots involving faculty and students and confrontations with police. At Kent State University in Ohio\, four student protestors lay dead\, shot by National Guard Troops. The war was widening and the news came that Nixon had authorized the bombing of Cambodia. No one knew how far it would go. There was an air of panic and a great sense of urgency. At Brandies University\, an idealistic young woman named Kathy Power was deeply disturbed by the violence she saw and passionately committed to ending the war. She joined a group of radical students who went beyond peaceful protest to engage in acts designed to bring about a revolution against a government they saw as responsible for horrific acts of violence. The group carried out a series of bank robberies across the country designed to raise funds to finance the revolution. In the tragic aftermath of a botched bank robbery in Waltham\, Massachusetts\, police officer Walter Schroeder was shot and killed. The three men and the other woman in the group were apprehended within days\, but Kathy Power escaped. She spent the next 23 years on the run – moving from place to place\, frequently changing her appearance until she ultimately settled in Oregon\, where living under an assumed name she married\, had a son\, and ran a successful restaurant and catering business. In 1993\, no longer able to live with her troubled conscience\, Kathy turned herself in to authorities and was sentenced to twelve years in prison. Thus began Kathy’s remarkable journey of intense self-examination\, atonement and a search for forgiveness for the harm she had caused. Together\, we will watch a segment of the powerful\, just-released documentary Forgiveness: A Time to Love\, a Time to Hate as Kathy tells her story\, then explore the difficulties and rewards in both seeking and granting forgiveness. The FORUM discussion is at 9:30 am\, Fellowship hour is at 10:30 am and after the service\, and the service is at 11:00 am. All activities take place at the Rice Park Community Building.

SUMMARY:"Prepared to Forgive" - with Rev. Nietfeld at Elmdale June 5
DESCRIPTION:Every day we face the chance to forgive. Without preparation\, forgiveness can be an agonizing inner struggle or we can find ourselves carrying a heavy grudge. The happy alternative is to prepare to forgive by considering Universalist theology\, a peacemaker ethic\, and some simple steps. Rev. Thea Nietfeld will present this message at the PUUF service June 5 at the Elmdale Community Center. We will meet in the smaller meeting room. Enter the left front door and head down the hallway and then enter the room on the left. The PUUF board will meet at 9:30 am. Fellowship hour is at 10:30 and after the service. The service begins at 11:00.

SUMMARY:Free Documentary Screening - "The Economics of Happiness"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of "The Economics of Happiness"\, a documentary about the worldwide movement for localization\, held at The Hutchinson Public Library 2nd floor auditorium at 7 pm on May 11. Both hard‐hitting and inspiring\, ‘The Economics of Happiness" demonstrates that millions of people across the world are already engaged in building a better world – that small scale initiatives are happening on a large scale. The film shows that countless initiatives are united around a common cause: rebuilding more democratic\, human scale\, ecological and local economies – the foundation of an "economics of happiness". The film features a chorus of voices from six continents calling for systemic economic change\, including David Korten\, Bill McKibben\, Vandana Shiva\, Rob Hopkins\, Richard\, Heinberg\, Juliet Schor\, Michael Shuman\, Helena Norberg‐Hodge\, and Samdhong Rinpoche ‐ the Prime Minister of Tibetʹs government in exile. There will be a short discussion after the film\, and enjoy complimentary popcorn during the movie! SUMMARY:Free Documentary Film Viewing: Taking Root, The Vision of Wangari Maathai
DESCRIPTION:TAKING ROOT tells the story of the Green Belt Movement of Kenya and its founder Wangari Maathai\, the first environmentalist and first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Professor Maathai discovered her life’s work by reconnecting with the rural women with whom she had grown up. They told her they were walking long distances for firewood\, clean water was scarce\, the soil was disappearing from their fields\, and their children were suffering from malnutrition. “Well\, why not plant trees?’ Maathai suggested. These women found themselves working successively against deforestation\, poverty\, ignorance\, embedded economic interests\, and government corruption\, until they became a national political force that helped to bring down Kenya’s 24-year dictatorship. Through TV footage and chilling first person accounts\, TAKING ROOT documents the dramatic confrontations of the 1980s and ‘90s and captures Maathai’s infectious determination and unwavering courage. Cinema verité footage of the tree nurseries and the women and children who tend them brings to life the confidence and joy of people working to improve their own lives and ensure the future and vitality of their land. TAKING ROOT captures a world-view in which nothing is perceived as impossible and presents an awe-inspiring profile of Maathai’s thirty-year journey of courage to protect the integrally connected issues of the environment\, human rights\, and democracy. A short discussion will follow the film\, and enjoy complimentary popcorn!

SUMMARY:"All Wanderers and Beggars Come From Zeus: Ruminations on Welcome and Hospitality", March 20 Service
DESCRIPTION:Rev. David Carter\, minister at the Wichita UU\, will join us as our guest speaker on Sunday March 20th to present his message “All Wanderers and Beggars Come From Zeus: Ruminations on Welcome and Hospitality”. The presentation will reflect on the idea current in many ancient cultures\, that welcome and hospitality are synonymous with wisdom and prosperity. We will see how this ancient cross cultural leitmotif of hospitality as enlightened self-interest has re-emerged in the ideation and institutions of the post-modern world. Finally\, we will speculate philosophically on the perfection of hospitality and welcome as an ideal of spiritual life\, and articulate present day instances of this ideal made manifest in the UU and other spiritual traditions. This service will begin at 11 am at Rice Park. The FORUM discussion will be prior to this service from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Fellowship/Coffee/Tea/Hot baked bread will be from 10:30 - 11:00 and after the service. 9:30 FORUM - Immigration Stories. Immigration tragedy. Margaret Regan’s book The Death of Josseline tells the story of a 14-year-old Mexican girl who dies crossing the desert on the U.S.-Mexican border. Regan shares the story of her own great-grandparents\, who emigrated from Ireland in 1872 only to die penniless in Philadelphia at the ages of 36 and 34. “We sometimes forget\,” she writes\, “that the American immigration saga\, cheerfully celebrated every Thanksgiving\, does not always have a happy ending for those who risk everything to cross the sea or desert\, though it may have for their descendants.” (UU World\, Winter 2010\, “A Nation of Immigrants\,” page 21) What is your family’s immigration story? When did your immigrant ancestors’ descendants begin to enjoy a better life? For this FORUM\, participants are invited to share their families’ immigrant history.

DESCRIPTION:The March 6 Service will begin at 11 am at the Rice Park Community Bldg\, Hutchinson. The PUUF board will meet for its monthly meeting at 9:30 am prior to the service. Coffe/Tea fellowship time from 10:30 – 11:00 am and after the service. March 6th Service - “Hospitality and Heart” with Rev. Thea Nietfeld Our tradition has been called a tradition of heresy; we could also call it a tradition of hospitality – of welcoming those whose beliefs have been rejected by the dominant culture. We take in wounded souls and seek to cultivate compassionate mutuality by recognizing the best in each other. Some things to think about as you prepare yourself for this service include reviewing experiences of giving and receiving hospitality\, especially spiritual hospitality\, and considering what it is about mutual respect and manners that gives energy to ongoing hospitality. How do these awarenesses influence the culture of a UU Fellowship? We will have a conversation ritual to support spiritual companionship.

SUMMARY:Free Documentary Film Viewing: 9500 Liberty
DESCRIPTION:Prince William County\, Virginia becomes ground zero in America’s explosive battle over immigration policy when elected officials adopt a law requiring police officers to question anyone they have "probable cause" to suspect is an undocumented immigrant. 9500 Liberty reveals the startling vulnerability of a local government\, targeted by national anti-immigration networks using the Internet to frighten and intimidate lawmakers and citizens. Alarmed by a climate of fear and racial division\, residents form a resistance using YouTube videos and virtual townhalls\, setting up a real-life showdown in the seat of county government. The devastating social and economic impact of the “Immigration Resolution” is felt in the lives of real people in homes and in local businesses. But the ferocious fight to adopt and then reverse this policy unfolds inside government chambers\, on the streets\, and on the Internet. 9500 Liberty provides a front row seat to all three battlegrounds. SUMMARY:Free Public Documentary Viewing: Laramie, Inside Out
DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled from Feb. 9 due to the heavy snow: The Kansas Equality Coalition and the Prairie Unitarian Universalist Fellowship are co-sponsoring a free public viewing of the film Laramie\, Inside Out\, an inspiring story of personal discovery and the meaning of community. In October 1998\, Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard was brutally beaten and left to die. The horror of this murder pushed Laramie into the media spotlight and sparked a nationwide debate about homophobia\, gay-bashing and hate crimes. Filmmaker Beverly Seckinger\, a native of Laramie\, Wyoming returned to Laramie to talk with students\, teachers\, parents and clergy about the impact that Matthew Shepard’s death had on their community. “A very personal look at the town and its people. Seckinger’s film is an important addition to the narratives that help us understand what happened to Matthew Shepard\, why it happened and how that community was affected by the crime.” Moises Kaufman\, The Laramie Project Laramie\, Inside Out is a story of hope and grace rising from the shadow of hate and darkness.” John Eric Rolfstad\, Lutheran Lesbian & Gay Ministries There will be a short discussion after the film. SUMMARY:"Words Matter", February 20 Service and FORUM Hour
DESCRIPTION:February 20 - The FORUM and Service\, 9:30 am and 11 am\, Elmdale Community Center\, 400 E. Ave E.\, Hutchinson America has become an adversarial culture where competition and winning at any cost are rampant in all departments of life. The hatred and paranoia of talk-radio hosts fills the airwaves with toxins that adversely affect anyone who hears these rants. Now this phenomenon has spread to large media operations like Fox News where ratings and corporate sponsorships seem to be dependent upon just how much the on-air personalities denigrate the opposition; tune in and you’ll soon be treated to a smorgasbord of right-wing rhetoric about big government and other pet peeves of angry political analysts. Meanwhile\, on the road\, candidates smear each other in TV ads and casually call it all part of the game of getting elected. In the words of Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat\, “What we have here is a scary dumbing down of democracy\, now regarded as an unsavory blend of entertainment and blood sport. Gone are the days of civil discourse or a mature debate about the issues facing the nation.” In his speech at the memorial service in Tucson on January 12\, 2011\, President Barack Obama pointed to a different way. He said: “At a time when our discourse has become so sharply polarized\, at a time when we are far too eager to lay the blame for all that ails the world at the feet of those who think differently than we do\, it’s important for us to pause for a moment and make sure that we are talking with each other in a way that heals\, not a way that wounds.” How can we get beyond adversarial fighting\, fear\, hatred\, paranoia\, and dirty tricks? What can we do to help return civility to the public square? Our "Words Matter" service is at 11 am at the Elmdale Community Center. Also plan on attending the 9:30 am FORUM hour prior to the service. The 9:30 am FORUM Hour: “The Moral Roots of Liberals and Conservatives” Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt studies morality and emotion in the context of culture. He asks: Why did humans evolve to have morals - and why did we all evolve to have such different morals\, to the point that our moral differences may make us deadly enemies? It’s a question with deep repercussions in war and peace - and in modern politics\, where reasoned discourse has been replaced by partisan anger and cries of “You just don’t get it!” Haidt asks\, “Can’t we all disagree more constructively?” He suggests we might build a more civil and productive discourse by understanding the moral psychology of those we disagree with\, and committing to a more civil political process. He’s also active in the study of positive psychology and human flourishing. Learn more about his drive for a more productive and civil politics - and sign a pledge to engage in civil politics - on his website CivilPolitics.org. You can also take an eye-opening quiz about your own morals at YourMorals.org. During the FORUM hour\, 9:30-10:30 am\, Feb. 20 at Elmdale\, we’ll watch Professor Haidt’s twenty minute lecture on TED TV. There will be time for what is certain to be a stimulating discussion.

SUMMARY:Free Public Documentary Viewing: Laramie, Inside Out
DESCRIPTION:The Kansas Equality Coalition and the Prairie Unitarian Universalist Fellowship are co-sponsoring a free public viewing of the film Laramie\, Inside Out\, an inspiring story of personal discovery and the meaning of community. "A very personal look at the town and its people. Seckinger's film is an important addition to the narratives that help us understand what happened to Matthew Shepard\, why it happened and how that community was affected by the crime." Moises Kaufman\, The Laramie Project Laramie\, Inside Out is a story of hope and grace rising from the shadow of hate and darkness." John Eric Rolfstad\, Lutheran Lesbian & Gay Ministries

SUMMARY:"Standing on the Side of Love", Feb. 6 Service (and PUUF Board Mtg)
DESCRIPTION:The Feb. 6 Service will begin at 11 am at the Rice Park Community Bldg\, Hutchinson. The PUUF board will meet for its monthly meeting at 9:30 am prior to the service. Coffe/Tea fellowship time from 10:30 - 11:00 am and after the service. We live in a climate of increasing intolerance\, hatred and inflammatory\, divisive political rhetoric. More than 77\,000 hate-crime incidents were reported by the FBI from 1998 to 2007. This was “nearly one hate crime for every hour of every day over the span of a decade\,” according to Attorney General Eric Holder in testimony in June 2009. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) reports that the number of hate groups operating in the United States has grown by 54 percent since 2000. How we choose to respond to acts of oppression\, hatred\, and violence is vitally important. The challenge for us is how to fight hatred without becoming hateful ourselves. We can choose to recoil in disgust or fear\, we can turn away giving in to our feelings of helplessness\, we can seal off our hearts in an effort to stay safe\, we can indulge our cynicism and allow hatred to take root in and around us\, or we can make a brave choice to stand squarely on the side of love. In the summer of 2009 the Unitarian Universalist Association launched a public advocacy campaign called Standing on the Side of Love. The idea behind it is to actively promote respect for the inherent worth and dignity of every person. As it says on the official website\, “We believe no one should be dehumanized through acts of exclusion\, oppression\, or violence because of their identities. Standing on the Side of Love is about lifting strong religious voices proclaiming love in the face of fear and hate.” The Standing on the Side of Love campaign is a way of empowering us\, and giving us the tools and language and mutual support to say that hatred and bigotry are just not okay and we\, as a people of faith\, will not put up with them in the wider communities in which we live. Join us as we examine the theological roots which lead UU’s to “stand on the side of love”\, and as we explore what “standing on the side of love” might look like in our individual and communal lives.

SUMMARY:January 23 Discussion Group to Focus on Morris Dees and the SPLC
DESCRIPTION:Darrell Pope\, Hutchinson NAACP President\, will lead our discussion on Jan. 23 on the work done by the Southern Poverty Law Center and its founder\, Morris Dees. The SPLC is an American nonprofit civil rights organization internationally known for its legal victories against white supremacist groups; for its free legal representation of the victims of hate groups; for its monitoring of hate groups\, militias and extremist organizations and their activities; and for its educational programs promoting tolerance. The SPLC’s litigating strategy involves filing civil suits for damages on behalf of the victims of hate group harassment\, threats\, and violence with the goal of financially depleting the responsible groups and individuals. While it originally focused on damages done by the Klan and other white supremacists\, throughout the years the SPLC has become involved in other civil rights causes\, among them\, cases concerned with institutional racial segregation and discrimination\, the mistreatment of aliens\, and the separation of church and state. We will meet at the Penwell-Gable Community Room 300 E. 30th (enter west door). Our potluck begins at 6 pm followed by the discussion.

DESCRIPTION:Mike Coon would like to introduce us to the “Woods” that he became acquainted with as a child. These “Woods” will be the Discussion Group speaker on December 26. They would like to speak to us in their sacred home\, so we will travel by carpool to get there. Their home is heated only with decaying vegetation\, so come dressed for the outdoor temperature and bring your own cup and a thermos of hot drink to share with others. We will meet at the Alco parking lot in South Hutchinson at 2:00 pm. It is less than a 30 minute drive from there. Call Pam at 620-202-0584 if you’re running late\, or if you’d like the directions to drive yourself. (This meeting will be canceled in the event of icy or snowpacked roads.) John Walter Riggs established the Riggs Arboretum just north of Waterloo in 1887. The oldest known arboretum west of the Mississippi River\, this ten acre stand of exotic trees has more than sixty varieties. We will enjoy silent meditative walks on the walking trails through the arboretum.

SUMMARY:Jan. 16 Service - Remembering Rev. James Reeb, UU Minister Who Heeded MLK's Call
DESCRIPTION:At RICE PARK: The FORUM Hour begins at 9:30 am. The Service begins at 11:00 am. The Rev. James Reeb was a white Unitarian Universalist minister active in the civil rights movement\, and who encouraged his parishioners to do the same. With his wife and four children\, he lived in poor black neighborhoods where he felt he could do the most good. He answered the call of Dr. Martin Luther King for clergy to come to Selma\, Alabama\, to protest violence by state troopers against civil rights marchers. On March 9\, 1965\, Reeb and two other UU ministers\, Rev. Orloff Miller and Rev. Clark Olsen\, were walking back after dinner to a meeting led by Dr. King when they were attacked by a group of white men. One hit Rev. Reeb in the head with a club. The blow was fatal and Rev. Reeb died March 11\, 1965. A friend later wrote [of James Reeb] that “the entire civil rights struggle suddenly came to a focus in him. . . He was a peaceable man who became the victim of a wholly unprovoked attack.”When he died\, there was mourning - and outrage - around the country. The next day\, Congress resounded with speeches denouncing the brutality and calling for government intervention. Deeply moved by the death of “that good man\,” President Lyndon Johnson instructed his aides to draft a voting rights bill. It was also tragic that it took the death of a white man to incite such a national outcry\, as exemplified by the case of Jimmie Lee Jackson\, who was shot dead by police in Marion\, Alabama two weeks earlier while protecting his mother from a beating; his case attracted much less national attention. The FORUM Hour at 9:30 prior to the service will be a discussion on Martin Luther King’s Other Dream “Economic Justice for All” The King we celebrate every January is forever frozen on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial\, delivering his “I Have a Dream” speech. Yet as historian and civil rights organizer Michael Honey says in his important new book “All Labor Has Dignity”\, People forget that King was every bit as committed to economic justice as he was to ending racial segregation. King’s dream called for nothing less than a radical restructuring of American economic life. As we struggle with massive unemployment\, a staggering wealth gap and the near collapse of our financial system\, King’s prophetic writings and speeches underscore his relevance for today. Check out the following articles and come prepared for a stimulating discussion led by Kay Engler: 1) “Martin Luther King on Economic Justice” http://www.moneyandvalues.blogspot.com/2008/01/Martin-Luther-king-on-economic-justice This above article includes links to three of MLK’s last speeches: “Beyond Vietnam” (April 4\,1967)\, “Where Do We Go From Here” (August 1967)\, “Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution” (March 31\, 1968) 2) Review of “All Labor Has Dignity” by Michael Honey. SUMMARY:Jan. 12 - Free Film Showing: “Tulia, Texas”
DESCRIPTION:“A lone undercover cop moves into a small farming town. By the end of the blazing summer of 1999\, 46 people are arrested for selling cocaine -- nearly all of them African American. It was heralded as one of the biggest drug busts in Texas history\, until a team of lawyers set out to uncover the truth. Through its scrupulous investigation of a landmark case\, Tulia\, Texas uncovers the deep-rooted assumptions about race and crime that still permeate our society and undermines our justice system. The film convincingly shows how the ‘war on drugs’ has become a war on due process\, waged against African Americans. Today America has the largest prison population in the world; in some states as much as 15 percent of the black male population is incarcerated. Tulia\, Texas shows one reason why. The underlying prejudices and policies that made the real crimes of Tulia possible are still widespread in American society. As of 2008\, despite scandals involving more than 30 task forces\, 600 operations like the one in Tulia remain. Tulia\, Texas challenges viewers to question the deep ties between race\, poverty and the criminal justice system in this country.” (California Newsreel) The Hutchinson NAACP and the PUUF are co-sponsoring this important film. Our showing is January 12\, 7 pm in the Hutchinson Public Library 2nd floor auditorium. Discussion will follow and enjoy complimentary popcorn while you watch.

SUMMARY:December 8 Film: "What Would Jesus Buy?"
DESCRIPTION:Studio synopsis: An examination of the commercialization of Christmas in America while following Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir on a cross-country mission to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse (the end of humankind from consumerism\, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt.) The film also delves into issues such as the role sweatshops play in America’s mass consumerism and Big-Box Culture. From the humble beginnings of preaching at his portable pulpit on New York City subways\, to having a congregation of thousands - Bill Talen (aka Rev. Billy) has become the leader of not just a church\, but a national movement. As the Rev. Billy shouts\, “We think we are being consumers at Christmastime . . . no\, we are CONSUMED!” The movie will be shown at the Hutchinson Public Library Auditorium on Wednesday\, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m.

SUMMARY:PUUF Service November 21 - Day of the Dead
DESCRIPTION:For our Forum hour and Service this month\, traditions\, beliefs\, and historical origins of the Day of the Dead\, a Latino holiday celebration\, will be explored and presented. From the earliest moments in time\, all peoples of the world have sought to honor their ancestors and to keep alive the connection they feel with them. Cultures throughout the world developed burial rituals\, marked the place of burial with simple stones or elaborate monuments\, placed food\, water and personal objects in the graves to assist loved ones on their journey to the afterlife. Once a year they held a celebration in honor of the dead. The living visited the dead – cleaning the graves and decorating them with flowers and candles\, sometimes holding vigils or bringing food to share with the dead. They built altars in their homes – decorating them with photographs and mementos of the deceased\, flowers\, candles and the dead person’s favorite foods and drinks – all to entice the spirits of the dead to return home to visit the living. The best known and arguably the most beautiful of these traditions is Mexico’s Day of the Dead\, celebrated on November 1 and 2 of each year. The Forum hour\, beginning at 9:30 a.m.\, will be a time of memorial celebration for those who you wish to remember. Bring items such as pictures and mementos to include in the communal alter we will construct. Latino alters for the Day of the Dead holiday are typically very colorful and include food offerings and flowers. During the Forum hour we will share memories\, poems\, or readings in honor of the deceased. Then join us for our service at 11:00 a.m. as PUUF member Kay Engler recounts the history and traditions of the Day of the Dead and the lessons it teaches us about living and dying.

SUMMARY:October Movie: The Yes Men Fix the World
DESCRIPTION:PUUF is sponsoring a public screening of "The Yes Men Fix the World" in the 2nd floor conference room at the Hutchinson Public Library. Here is the description from the film's website: THE YES MEN FIX THE WORLD is a screwball true story about two gonzo political activists who\, posing as top executives of giant corporations\, lie their way into big business conferences and pull off the world's most outrageous pranks. From New Orleans to India to New York City\, armed with little more than cheap thrift-store suits\, the Yes Men squeeze raucous comedy out of all the ways that corporate greed is destroying the planet. Brüno meets Michael Moore in this gut-busting wake-up call that proves a little imagination can go a long way towards vanquishing the Cult of Greed. Who knew fixing the world could be so much fun? http://theyesmenfixtheworld.com/

SUMMARY:Movie Night, September 5
DESCRIPTION:The Diving Bell and the Butterfly “Experience the triumphant tale of renowned editor Jean-Dominique Bauby\, a man whose love of life and soaring vision shaped his will to achieve a life without boundaries.” The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a 2007 French/American biopic/drama film based on the memoir of the same name by Jean-Dominique Bauby. The film depicts Bauby’s life after suffering a massive stroke\, at the age of 42\, which left him with a condition known as locked-in syndrome. The condition paralyzed him from the neck down. Although both eyes work\, doctors decide to sew up his right eye as it is not irrigating correctly and they fear it will become infected. He is left with only his left eye\, and thereafter communicates only by blinking his left eyelid. The film won awards at the Cannes Film Festival\, the Golden Globes and the BAFTA Awards\, as well as four Academy Award nominations. Rated PG-13 for nudity\, sexual content and some language. We are showing the movie in the community room Sunday\, September 5 at the Penwell-Gable Funeral Home at 300 E. 30th\, Hutchinson. The movie will begin at 6 pm.

SUMMARY:PUUF Service
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly PUUF service is Sunday August 15 at 11:00 a.m. at the Rice Park Community Shelter Building at the Rice Park Community Building\, 44 Swarens Street\, Hutchinson\, KS. The sermon topic for this day reflects on the life of Margaret Fuller\, 19th century transcendentalist\, feminist\, social reform advocate\, and attended the Unitarian church. From the message: "We all struggle with our own issues\, wrestle with God and demons\, meet the day head on and make mistakes. We alienate people close to us and run away from some of the roughest\, harshest tangles that come our way. We aren’t easy people. We aren’t simple\, acting out our characters\, trying to live the life that is most possible for us. We wouldn’t be heroes and heroines\, models in our own ways\, for the lives of the next generation\, if we were simple. We are called to join together in courage and wisdom\, in truth and trust\, to affirm and live by what we know and what we learn. We are called to affirm and engage in the disagreements that do not destroy us and— in our ongoing commitment and love of life and one another—make us who we are." Please join us for this hour of spiritual reflection and community connection. Directions: From the intersection of 17th Avenue and Hendricks St.\, go east 2 blocks to James St. then go north on James 1 block to Ida St. Take Ida to Swarens; go right about 2 blocks.

SUMMARY:June 20 "Juneteenth" Service
DESCRIPTION:Come join us Sunday\, June 20\, at 11:00 a.m. at the Rice Park Community Shelter Building\, Hutchinson\, for a celebration of Juneteenth\, the oldest known commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Since its origin in Galveston\, Texas in 1865\, the observance of June 19 as African American Emancipation Day has spread across the country and has grown in popularity. It has always been a day marked by community celebrations\, guest speakers\, picnics and family gatherings\, but in recent years institutions such as the Smithsonian and the Henry Ford Museum have begun sponsoring Juneteenth-centered activities designed to promote and cultivate knowledge of African American history and culture. As of 2010\, Juneteenth is recognized as a holiday in 36 states (including Kansas) and the District of Columbia. Our speaker for the day is long-time Hutchinson resident and community activist Carmon Roberts Agee. Carmon is a manager for SRS\, has served on the boards of the Salvation Army\, First Call for Help\, United Way of Reno County\, and many others and has facilitated women’s life skills and employment workshops. Carmon’s topic is “Growing Up Black in Hutchinson”.
